Property Improvement Grants

To help you make the necessary energy efficiency improvements to your property, you may be eligible for home improvement grants from Warm Homes Suffolk.

To be eligible, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Your property doesn’t have mains gas central heating
  • The gross household income (from all sources) is less than £31,000
  • Your property has a low energy rating (EPC band D, E, F, G)
  • You’re a landlord with four rental properties or fewer.

Alternatively, you can check your eligibility here.

If you qualify for a grant, keep in mind that grants will cover a maximum of two-thirds of the improvement cost.

What improvements can you make with the grant?

There are a number of improvements you can make with the grants. All ways help increase the energy efficiency of your property and hence help reduce your tenant’s energy bills.

Insulation

The first improvement is usually your property’s insulation because it plays such a large role in energy efficiency. There are a number of types, but most properties can have cavity wall insulation, which is where insulation fills the gap between the inner and outer layers of bricks.

However, if your property is older, you may not have cavity walls. Instead, you can fit internal or external wall insulation.

Another option is loft insulation. If you have no loft space because you have a loft conversion or your property is a flat, then you could potentially install room in roof insulation and/or flat roof insulation.

LED Lighting

An easy and energy-efficient switch is to replace your current light bulbs with LED bulbs. They use only a quarter of the energy of standard bulbs and last much longer.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps use the heat from outside to help heat your property. In some situations, you may be eligible for a grant to pay for the installation of the heat pump.

Solar Energy

You could also get grants towards the installation of Photovoltaic (PV) panels. These convert the heat from sunlight into electricity so generate power all year round.

Remember, MEES regulations from April 2020 state that your property must have at least an EPC rating of E unless exempt. So, to find out more about possible grants and bringing your property’s energy efficiency up to the legal requirement, visit Warm Homes Suffolk’s website.
