Navigating Right to Rent: Guidance for Landlords and Property Professionals

Helping you navigate changing requirements with confidence.

As Right to Rent requirements continue to evolve, keeping up with the latest guidance can be challenging. Finding the information you need often means navigating lengthy procedures and guidance documents, which can be time-consuming.

To help landlords and property professionals stay informed, the Home Office is hosting two online Right to Rent Town Hall events in September. These sessions will provide an overview of key policies and procedures, offering practical guidance and updates on recent changes. Whether you have specific questions or simply want to ensure you remain up to date, these events are a great opportunity to hear directly from Home Office colleagues and gain valuable insights.

The session will cover a range of important topics, including:

  • eVisa transition – what digital immigration status means for landlords and how tenants can now prove their right to rent.
  • Identity checking – how to ensure that the person presenting for a check is the rightful holder of the status.
  • Ways to carry out checks – including the Home Office online service, manual document checks (where permitted), and the use of Identity Service Providers.
  • When checks are required – including checks that must be completed before a tenancy begins and when follow-up checks may be needed.
  • Acceptable evidence – understanding when physical documents can still be used and when digital checks are required.
  • Getting it right – avoiding unlawful discrimination, using the correct checking methods, and maintaining a statutory excuse through proper record keeping.
